Moganshan ‘Clouds’

Moganshan, Hangzhou, China

Unlike the now recently completed Shimao Wonderlad Intercontinental Hotel in a quarry in Shanghai, which took 12 years to realize from concept to completion, The Moganshan Joe Lalli Narada Resort Hotel nicknamed, ‘Clouds’, recently completed and handed over, took only 2 years. Having designed the concept in late 2016, the ‘soft’ opening of this resort hotel took place on 20th October this year. That is a record time even for China, where the construction is quite known to be extremely fast.

This building is the main hotel facility for a leisure resort located in a beautiful Moganshan mountains close to Hangzhou and within 1 hour travel distance of Shanghai.
The 14,000m2 building houses the main reception, banqueting and conference rooms, with restaurants and bars on upper levels. 50 guestrooms are incorporated into the plan together with all necessary guest facilities. Basement accommodates the back of the house facilities for the whole resort. The form and materials of the building concept express the importance of fitting into the beautiful natural environment of Moganshan and sensitively express the character of the mountains, forests, rainclouds and waterfalls. The important aspect of the design is the intimate relationship between the external form and visual character of the building and it’s interior, design by Hong Kong based interior design studio STYLUS. The design concept closely follows Martin;s design philosophy of ‘Sensitive’ design, taking into account not only the rational design factors, but also using feelings and emotional response to the local context to be reflected in the design.

Martin says: ‘It is thrilling to see the concept for this beautifully located hotel becoming reality so fast, without losing the quality of materials and workmanship. Both JADE team the client and the contractor have worked hard to make this building as close to the initial concept as possible.’
